Local legends of the Vendée to tell around a campfire at the Tropicana
The Tropicana invites you to rediscover the most beautiful Vendée legends to be told around a campfire, among dunes, marshes and mysteries.
There are evenings when time seems to stand still. The sand is still warm underfoot, the salty breeze caresses faces, and in the center of the circle, a fire crackles slowly.
The children are snuggling up in their blankets, the adults are listening… It’s the perfect time for a story.
In Vendée, there’s no shortage of legends. Passed down orally for centuries, they are born in the marshes, creep through the dunes, wander through the forests, and sail across the ocean.
Some make you shudder, others amaze, but all awaken a part of the imagination that everyday life often forgets.
At Le Tropicana, a 5-star campsite in Saint-Jean-de-Monts , these stories take on a magical dimension.
Because what could be better than an exceptional natural setting, far from artificial light, to bring the mysteries of yesteryear back to life? As night falls, let yourself be transported… The Vendée has so much to tell.

The ghost of the Passage du Gois
You surely know this mythical path that connects the island of Noirmoutier to the continent… This strip of land that disappears twice a day under the tides is already impressive by its very existence.
But according to local fishermen, on some foggy evenings, you might come across figures dressed in old-fashioned clothes , moving slowly forward, as if frozen in time. They say they are the souls of lost sailors, trapped by the rising tide before the invention of safety buoys.
The sound of a rusty bell, a cold breath on the back of your neck… and the feeling of being watched. Even the most rational prefer not to linger there at nightfall.
The White Lady of Veillon
In the wild dunes north of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, the elders speak of a “ white lady ” dressed in linen and wind , who would appear to those seeking love.
According to legend, she is the spirit of a young sailor’s daughter, drowned one stormy night while waiting for her fiancé to return. Since then, she has wandered between sea and sand, holding a golden shell in her hands.
It is said that those who meet her gaze are blessed with eternal love… or doomed to never love again. The story is chilling, but many walk alone at dawn, “just in case.”
Devil’s Fog in the Monts Forest
Some walkers have experienced it: an uneventful stroll in the forest… until the fog suddenly descends, without warning , like a supernatural veil.
Reports describe total disorientation, compasses going haywire, and a strange sensation of always returning to the same tree , even when changing direction.
Legend has it that this fog is the work of a protective spirit of the place, an old woodcutter who got lost here two centuries ago. He supposedly traps those who don’t respect the forest, to teach them to listen and slow down. Children love this story. Adults… a little less so.
The Phantom Saber Pact at Sion-on-the-Ocean
Every August 24th, at low tide, a white-haired old man comes to walk alone on the beach in Sion. He searches, always in the same place.
He is rumored to be the last descendant of a Vendée soldier who made a supernatural pact to survive the war , burying his cursed saber somewhere among the rocks.
This sword is said to reappear on certain evenings, when the ocean moves further out than expected. But anyone who approaches it feels an electric shock and hears muffled screams from another time.
No one knows if this weapon ever existed, but the man himself returns every year , tirelessly. And that’s not a legend.
Stories to bring to life
These stories are not just children’s tales: they embody the invisible link between the Vendée landscapes and those who inhabited them . They add another dimension to your vacation, especially when the stories become a collective experience around the fire.
So, the next time the wood crackles and night falls on Le Tropicana campsite, listen up. And tell your story. Because that’s how legends live on: through those who take the time to pass them on .
